Once the site of a Roman ford, then a cluster of remote settlements within the royal Peak Forest hunting grounds, the water flowing from Kinder Scout helped turn Hayfield into a thriving industrial town. Built from locally quarried millstone grit, Hayfield is now a quiet village nestled in the shadows of the Pennines with a rich history for those who know where to look.

Learn how the heart of the village formed into its present shape. Explore the history of Hayfield’s landmarks, learn how the village evolved over time, hear stories from its past, and discover how the industrial revolution transformed the village into what we see today.

The Hayfield village tour involves around 1.5 miles (2.4 km) of walking, mostly around the center of the village and part of Kinder Road.
Tours typically involve 3 sets of stairs, a few short steep sections of tarmac, and can include an optional short walk up Snake Path, which is an uphill gravel path with very poor footing. All these features can be avoided and we are happy to adjust the tour as requested.
Absolutely! We are extremely dog-friendly.
